Just what is a “Marmont” anyway? Other than being the name of one of Gucci Creative Director, Alessandro Michele’s preferred hotels—the grand old Hollywood Chateau Marmont—you probably know the Marmont as the Gucci “it” bag that comes in many forms. In fact, the Gucci Marmont comes in so many forms that she might seem hard to pin down sometimes. What makes a Marmont a Marmont? And what is it that makes this little number so irresistible? Let’s take a closer look.
We’ll start with the hardware. The most recognizable feature of any Gucci Marmont is likely the forward facing GG emblem. Like Prestige Online tells us, this take on the interlocking G’s that make up Gucci’s classic logo has been showing up since the 60s. The double G is much older than that. Logo Central tells the story that in 1933, Aldo Gucci—son of Gucci founder, Guccio Gucci—designed the interlocking, facing double G to honor his father, who had run the business for 12 years without a logo. Creative Director, Alessandro Michele is credited with reinvigorating the antiqued gold GG emblem and the House of Gucci as a whole when he took the helm in 2015 and debuted the Gucci Marmont line just a year later in the summer of 2016.
That twist on the classic name shines front and center on every Marmont and is backed by quality quilted (or Matelassé) material. Usually found in either calfskin leather or velvet, Marmonts often feature a chevron pattern in their quilting, but others have diagonals or a blend of chevron and a scalloped patterning.
Stitched into the back of each Marmont piece—whether it’s a wallet, a shoulder bag, or bucket tote—is either a heart or another iteration of the forward facing GG symbol.
Beyond that, the Marmont family encompasses even more fun variations. Belt bags and crossbodies come in pleasing rounded shapes, while the shoulder bags and flaps square off a little in their structure.
Many bags feature elegant, adjustable chain straps. Some include embroidered elements reminiscent of the hippie influence Vogue mentions in describing Michele’s upbringing. No matter which version you choose, though, all Marmonts seem to exhibit poppy, playful updates on vintage charm.
Reviewers don’t get too hung up on the definitions of the Marmont, though. Most praise the bag’s flexibility in style and sturdy, scratch-resistant leather. It’s definitely the kind of bag that will work its way into your heart and your life even more as you carry it!
